Louis Golden

Many of you may remember Louis from the Caythorpe reunions.

Louis (pronounced Lewis) Golden has just died. He has been an enormously generous benefactor of good causes around Petworth and further afield including, among many others, the British Legion.

He was one of the earliest red beret signals officers in WW2 and I believe was involved in Sicily and at Arnhem

His obit can be found on the following link :

Additional note : Private family funeral in London; memorial service at Petworth in due course.

Further to my last, just received the following from Doug Laing, "My sister and husband are safe in Toronto after getting to Puerto Rica by boat. Very tearful but grateful to the Puerto Ricans who have been brilliant.
Everything wrecked no electricity, only cash as no electronics for purchases. Island devastated, difficult to see how they can overcome disaster of this magnitude. Apparently Britain say we cannot use £13 billion Overseas Aid as they don't qualify!!"
Hopefully they can now start getting their lives back together.

Has anyone heard from David & Gail Harris? Many will be aware that they live in the British Virgin Islands an area that was badly affected by the recent hurricane. I have tried to contact them via email but I suspect given the damage to the island's infrastructure it may be many months before we hear. If anyone has any news please will they let me know.

Looks like it wasn't meant to be this year. We missed Caythorpe Gutted ! What with getting our weekends mixed up, my sister going into hospital with suspected encyphalitis, Me doing a lousey "front left" landing on one of our pavements near here. The pavement won. Am now battered and aching all over. Not a good start to September. Mavis really gutted./ She was looking forwards all year. Anyway we hope you all had a great weekend and drunk the pubs dry! Looking forwards to the next one, and thanks to Margaret who was concerned about our absence. All the best to all, Norman and Mavis

Lovely to catch up with everyone at Caythorpe. Special place. Next on the horizon is Armictice at the NMA on Sunday 12th November. Bit special this year as I understand John Aspinall would like to 'dedicate the bench' which is now in place by our tree. As always we will have a nice lunch after the events at the NMA which is another opportunity for a catch up with Airborne pals. Please email me ASAP and let me know if are planning to attend and if you want to be included in the lunch. Jimmy

Last night I was in Merville Bks for 2 Para inter company boxing finals.
In the 7 bouts, there was 1-ko, two fights were stopped by the ref, three unanimous verdicts and 1 split decision. As you can see a superb night of boxing by some excellent young boxers. Bodes well for the Btn winning back the army major units trophy. After we had a few beers in 2 Para's Sgt Mess, followed by the usual "Ruby Murray" - Happy days!!

I served with Lt McGillivray in 33rd Signal Troop in 1952/3 and knew him very well later in the Corps. He gave me 3 days jankers for the heinous military crime of dust on the tent floor and which we laughed about years later. He was a soldiers soldier and ran a great troop. Too far for me to make it to the funeral but I will be there in spirit. RIP Sir.

Subject : Lt. Col (Retd) Peter A MacFarlane MacGillivray

Dear Stan,

We thought you’d like to know that Lt. Col (Retd) Peter A MacFarlane MacGillivray O.B.E. (390702) of Richmond, North Yorkshire died peacefully on Saturday 15th July, aged 89, surrounded by his beloved wife Sylvia and children Fiona and Andrew. ‘Black Mac’ served with The Royal Signals, 16 Ind. Para Bgd and 33rd Airborne in Egypt, Cyprus, Aden, Germany, Turkey and in the UK. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Funeral Service at Darlington Crematorium on 26th July at 11.45 a.m. followed by a reception at The Kings Head, Richmond from 1p.m. In lieu of flowers there will be a collection for Bethesda, a charity in Stornoway that he supported with his bagpipe playing.

Everyone who knew him is very welcome.

We’d be so grateful if you could pass this news on to anyone in the Airborne Signals Old Comrades Association who knew him, as the times he spent serving with the airborne and the good fellowship he enjoyed throughout, were very close to his heart.

With best wishes

Andrew & Fiona MacGillivray

Really sorry to hear the news about Arnie. Served with him in an infantry section with 1 Para in Aden. Top bloke. Guys, as the requests for contributions to obituaries continue can I make a suggestion. Go on to the appropriate Yougov website and download the form for requesting your military records. I have just recently done this and received the lot within a couple of weeks, free of charge. This will be a great help to whoever has to do the deed in the future. I am planning to do this myself in the next few months, write the obituary I mean, not die!! Take care.

Request for Photo's -Dear Stan Stanley,

I am writing to you today on behalf of my Nan and Grandad. Unfortunately as of 2012 my Grandad, Graham William Bale, has been ill due to progressing Alzheimer's. It has been very distressing for all of us to watch him slowly deteriorate.

My Nan has asked if anybody has any pictures of my Grandad and if you could advise us on where we can get a flag with his regiment number on for his funeral. Thank you for the invites for reunions, but of course due to my Grandad being bedbound he cannot attend though i'm sure he would still love to. We will inform you in the event of his passing.

Kind Regards,
Connor Allbright
